Friend to a friend, “Never stop learning, mate” As the shona proverb goes “chitsva chirimurutsoka” summing up the importance of exposure, going out there and exposing yourself to different things.
I have had the privilege to attend this year’s mini GLS. If that’s new to you GLS stands for Global Leadership Summit, a unique initiative coined by a not-for-profit organisation that aims to inspire and equip leadership that ignites transformation.
🎯What caught my eye?
I have been a student of entrepreneurship for some time now. One of the questions I had after learning about entrepreneurship is why is not everyone doing it. This was then followed by this question to those who choose the path of entrepreneurship why are there different levels of success? Taking into thought that some were millionaires while some were billionaires Yet, “WE ALL HAVE THE SAME 24 HOURS A DAY”. My simple answer back then zeroed down to Habits, though other factors come into play to justify that difference. And the best work I have seen on the subject of Habits was from this fantastic guy “James Clear.” An author of the best-selling book Atomic Habits who happened to be one of the speakers. Obviously, I had to hear what the guy had to say. That’s how I got the ticket or should I say choose to invest in the summit. After all the ticket price was very low close to nothing.
📑What did I learn from the GLS
James Clear
Now trying to explain the whole doctrine of habits in this article would be a worst of effort all I can say is they are crucial trust me but rather learn from the guru himself check out the Atomic Habits by James Clear.
As of the summit, we were asked five powerful questions after James’ talk.
- What kind of person do you want to be one year from now?
- What are the habits that this future you have?
- What are the current habits that are stopping you from being that person?
- Choose one key habit that will lead you to your future self.
- How do you make that habit easy, attractive and appealing?
The answers to these questions are a bit personal, rather attend the next big GLS in Zimbabwe I’m sure I will share them there with you. Though this time it won’t be my one-year older self as I have already started working on the habit. But as you can see questions 1 and 2 force you to have a vision of your future self. Very important staff surely, you cannot be roaming around without a vision. Question 3 forces you to do a self-check on your bad habits. A true leader understands his/her situation, as a true self-check helps in taking the necessary steps forward. Questions 4 and 5 force you to strategies and realise that vision in an interesting way. Habits are not supposed to be hard and stressful; they should not be difficult to undertake this is what constitutes good and successful habits. These are some things a leader would focus on and work on as he/she improves him/ herself, ultimately influencing others around them. I salute James Clear, I recommend his work if you have time check out his work, if you don’t then create the time.
Ryan Leak
Now before the GLS, I didn’t know this guy. A guy with an interesting Christian upbringing, marriage proposal and experience with the late NBA Legend Kobe Bryant. Ryan had great insights to share and thanks to the GLS I had an opportunity to learn them. A great storyteller he is indeed and during his talk, he pointed out 3 questions that really transform one’s thinking rewiring it in a way that improves your leadership.
- What is your definition of success?
- What is it like on the other side of yourself?
- What would you do if knew you wouldn’t fail?
Ryan’s work is also thought-provoking. Yet again in my journey of studying entrepreneurship, one of the questions I was forced to ask, and answer was his first question. What is the definition of success? There is no one true answer because it differs from individual to individual and for myself, I had to answer it so as to control my stress levels, but further asking the other questions really helped me level up my game and made me want to understand more about success and failure. Definitely, I will read his work and I invite you too to do so. Sharing is caring and it’s the best thing I can do right now.
😶Secret
This is just a mini-summit I attended and look at the nuggets I found not forgetting the networking part of it all. I made new friends and would wish to make more. Imagine the information such a summit holds yet the main key point and fact I want you to know is that it is good and important but learning with like-minded people, is phenomenal. This is a summit that could change your life, career & most importantly your circle of influence, taking it to the next level.
Check out the main conference on the 6th and 7th of November 2023 with these and other speakers. If you miss this one see you next year then, by that time I would have evolved into a better person. Take it as a challenge to learn with leaders and develop your influence for the greater good of those around you. Leadership with a higher purpose.
